DEVELOPMENT OF PARALEGAL QUALIFICATIONS IN SCOTLAND; an update of our on-going work with the Scottish Qualifications Authority

Development of Paralegal Qualifications in Scotland

The SPA is delighted that, as a result of work undertaken by the SQA in association with the college sector and the SPA, that new Personal Development Awards (PDAs), validated by the SQA, will run across Scotland from September 2009.

The SPA welcome the positive developments in paralegal education and training.  A number of providers across the country will run the new SQA validated courses which have added to the range of qualifications which already exist for paralegals in Scotland and will provide greater choice for those undertaking paralegal education.

During the last week of September, SPA were guests of Central College during its 'Law Week', a week of events held to celebrate the launch of the college's Centre for Paralegal Education, and delivery of the PDA awards from this academic session. We look forward to similar developments in colleges across Scotland.

A second and final consultation on the Law Society of Scotland Registered Paralegal scheme for Scotland will be published later this year. This is an exciting stage in the development of the scheme and we look forward to working with all providers of paralegal courses which could qualify students for entry.
