Redundancies

Do you have any input?

Things are not improving and the feedback we are getting is that there has been a considerable increase in the number of legal firms making staff redundant – not only Paralegals but support staff, Trainees and Solicitors. The Agencies report that there are very few vacancies available and no signs of matters improving in the foreseeable future. We would urge anyone who finds themselves in this position to ensure that redundancy procedures are followed – this can be important should you wish to claim on your mortgage protection policy which would cover redundancy in most cases but you do need to have a letter from your employers stating they have made you redundant. Some Firms appear reluctant to class the termination of employment as redundancy as this means they would require to make a redundancy payment and are simply stating that they have to let people go but will re-employ them once the market picks up again. The signals are this will not be until 2010 at the earliest. As previously advised advice at no cost can be obtained from ACAS by both employers and employees on the correct procedures to follow. We are happy to assist when we can so please don’t hesitate to contact us.
