Second and Final Consultation on Law Society of Scotland Registered Paralegal Scheme
Further to the preliminary consultation on a proposed ' Registered Paralegal ' scheme in Scotland, held in 2008, the Law Society of Scotland has launched its final policy proposals for consultation from today, Monday 30th November 2009.
The Law Society of Scotland Registered Paralegal scheme, developed in partnership with the Scottish Paralegal Association (SPA), is set to launch in spring/summer 2010. The proposals are that it will comprise entry standards, a Code of Conduct, Continuing Professional Development rules and complaints regime. Each Registered Paralegal will work under the supervision of a Scottish solicitor .
The Society is committed to this scheme which seeks to define and credit the role of the paralegal in Scotland – for paralegals, for solicitors, and crucially for the public who need to have faith in the knowledge and skills of the people dealing with their legal transactions.
The SPA has firmly believed for many years that not only should the role of paralegal be promoted and that paralegals should gain the recognition they deserve, but that consistent and high standards are an absolute necessity to their integrity and respect as an emerging profession.
The first stage of the launch next year will be to transfer practising paralegals who already meet the standard of ‘Registered Paralegal’ into the scheme, before it is opened to new entrants.
The Society encourages everyone with an interest in how the paralegal profession in Scotland should develop to use this final opportunity to share their views. This final stage is crucial, as it takes forward the responses to the 2008 consultation, and intends to ensure that the final scheme is fit for purpose. The policy paper is available for comment on the Society’s website until Friday, 28th January 2010. It can be accessed at: www.lawscot.org.uk/ paralegals.
Please take this opportunity make your views known and support this scheme.
